There was a time when
Synergy was an essential part of my daily workflow. The software’s ability to seamlessly share a single keyboard and mouse across multiple machines felt almost magical — an elegant solution that transformed multi-device setups into a unified experience. It was lightweight, intuitive, and remarkably ahead of its time. I recommended it often and relied on it heavily.
However, over time, Synergy entered what can only be described as a turbulent period. The project began to show signs of corporate restructuring or shifting priorities. Updates became infrequent, and long-standing issues remained unresolved. In response, community-driven forks emerged in an attempt to revive the software’s original spirit, but most of these initiatives eventually lost momentum and faded away.
Deskflow is the officially sponsored, open-source successor to Synergy’s original vision, and it's being developed by the community with direct funding and support from Synergy itself. For those of us who once relied on Synergy and lamented its decline, Deskflow offers a hopeful and practical path forward — one that blends the best of both worlds: the passion of the open-source community and the resources of an established sponsor. I truly hope more projects an go this route and I commend synergy for this initiative.
It works great in wayland and all of the issues I had with keymaps, bizarre input lag and such seem to have been fixed. It also properly uses portals on wayland meaning the security model is in place. Unfortunately clipboard sharing hasn't been implemented yet but it's on the todo-list.
If you stopped using synergy for the same reasons I did then give
deskflow a whirl, it works great. And if you need a version with corporate support on offer then go for
synergy.
