The concept behind the fediverse is nothing new. Instead of having one single server, or network, that is run by a single entity, usually a company, you have multiple independent instances that communicate. This allows you, as a user, to sign up to any one of the servers. If you get banned from one then you can always pick another. Same if your server goes offline for financial, technical or other reasons.
